Not since the late 20's to early '30's has America experienced so fast a transition in culture. 1962/3 was the end of the 50's and Jack Kennedy's death marked the beginning of the 60's -- it was really quite something to experience and to remember.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8105856194476182528.post-10545227058022667472014-04-03T16:10:26.313-07:002014-04-03T16:10:26.313-07:00Does anyone remember the Mels Drive-in on Shattuck...Does anyone remember the Mels Drive-in on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley? I believe it was on Channing Way and Shattuck Ave. The location became 'The Haven' in the mid '70s and closed in the early '80s.Russ Smithnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8105856194476182528.post-15234962419342228802013-08-11T21:55:46.450-07:002013-08-11T21:55:46.450-07:00Can anyone tell me the difference between Mel'...Can anyone tell me the difference between Mel's drive in and original Mel's diner. As a matter ...Thank you for leaving your comments. As a matter of fact, I have written about the swift change in America, a couple of times (ie., see blog post from Wednesday, September 29, 2010 titled, "American Graffiti Style Pt II.") However, you have articulated it really well. I like your observations. I agree, there has never been such an extreme contrast in American culture in such a short period of time. I find it really interesting what your dad told you about his experience and how after only 2 tours in Vietnam things had changed so much when he came home. It's hard to imagine. I love hearing history from those who lived it. Peace! A couple "new" genres of music came out and some clothing changes but the cars still sucked, looked the same and the attitudes weren't that much different. Other than the internet starting out in second half of the 90's, those 10 years really didn't seem to change much. And putting the internet and world politics completely aside I would dare say not much really changed from 1999 to 2009. For sure not on the grand scale of going from 1962 to 1972!

But to see this movie account for how it was in the early 60's then fast forward to when it was actually made, boy O' boy it's like a completely different world. I guess the USA's involvement in Vietnam and the byproduct of the counter/drug culture really did change everything? I just can't see that much changing like that in a mere 10 years, actually less than 10 years, all that change happened from what 66 to 69 and the last "Summer of Love"?! But I guess it did.

My Dad graduated high school in 1965 and he says the change wasn't gradual at all. He left for 2 tours in Vietnam 66 and 67 and when he came back it was like turning off a light switch with how drastic and fast everything changed, from the music to dress to attitude, etc. He did say at least the cars were still muscled out and sweet though. I thank the lame ass 1980’s and “high impact plastic”,(Fiero’s anyone?), as the death knell for real steel muscle cars. I don’t know the whole thing just floors me.
TampaPipeSmokerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09529235464336879758noreply@blogger.com
